Come and join Prof Stavros Kiliaridis,
the EOS 2022 Distinguished Teacher, in an interactive free webinar lecture for postgraduate students titled

"The challenge of anterior open bite"

The lecture will consider the following:
1) Aspects on the development and control of the vertical dentofacial dimension
2) Aetiology, diagnosis and treatment approaches for anterior open bite (AOB)
3) Treatment and stability of AOB
This webinar represents 3 hours of Continuing Professional Development (3 CPD points).

Speaker BioDr Kiliaridis was Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics of the University of Geneva, from 1999 to 2021, and is currently adjunct Professor at the University of Bern and Professor Emeritus at the University of Geneva. He graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and received his PhD from Göteborg University, Sweden, where he also completed his specialist education in orthodontics. He then worked in the same University as an Associate Professor for 10 years, while maintaining a part-time private practice in Thessaloniki, Greece. He is a member of the European Orthodontic Society (EOS) and an active member of the Angle Society of Europe. Dr Kiliaridis has authored or co-authored over 230 research papers and several book-chapters. He has been speaker at numerous orthodontic congresses and lectured in many universities worldwide. He was coordinator (from 2006 to 2015) of the European Orthodontic Teachers Forum, and president (from 2017 to 2019) of the Network for Erasmus Based European Orthodontic Programmes. He was the recipient of the EOS Essay Award in 1988, and was honoured as the Alton Moore Annual Memorial Lecturer, University of Washington in 2002, and the Sheldon Friel Lecture of the EOS in 2015. The scientific work performed by students under his supervision has been internationally recognised on numerous occasions.

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise the aetiological factors that may cause AOB.

  • To understand the role of continuous tooth eruption in the development of AOB

  • To gain insight into how different therapeutic approaches may give good treatment results

  • To understand that the stability of the treatment results may be independent of the appliances used during treatment

Abstract  AOB is a phenotype with different origins and the various aetiological factors that have caused the AOB may have a different impact on the treatment results and stability. The common denominator of many patients with AOB is the disharmony between vertical facial growth and the continuous eruption of the posterior teeth with respect to that of the anterior teeth. Recent findings, based on clinical and animal experimental studies, shed light on the influence of the elevator muscles on the amount of continuous tooth eruption.  Cohort studies of individuals suffering from various diseases (such as myotonic dystrophy, progressive muscular dystrophy, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis) reveal the pattern of the development of different AOBs and provide the possibility to extrapolate the findings to healthy individuals with mouth breathing, deviations in head posture or aberrant tongue position.  Different treatment modalities may give good results in the treatment of AOB, but it is not the type of appliances that will ensure stability. Understanding the factors that may have caused the AOB and possibly influenced the continuous eruption of the teeth during childhood, adolescence and adulthood is a key-issue that may bring us closer to the solution of this big challenge: AOB treatment and stability.
