We are pleased to invite all EOS members and non-members, Dental Care Professionals, practising orthodontists and postgraduates to the first Oral Health series, in partnership with Colgate-Palmolive Europe

The Oral Health programme is titled: “Why will my patients not listen to me? - Recommendations to keep your patients' teeth healthy during an orthodontic treatment and how to motivate them to implement your recommendations at home."

In this exciting webinar series, the EOS partnered with Colgate-Palmolive Europe to offer you the latest insights on how to keep your patients healthy during an orthodontic treatment. Dr. van der Kaaij will present an overview of evidence-based prevention of common oral diseases threatening the success of an orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, even the best oral care routine will not help if the patient does not implement it at home. Therefore, the second webinar by Dr. Asimakopoulou will give an overview on behaviour change with practical examples on how to use it with your orthodontic patients.

This webinar series represents hours of verifiable Continuing Professional Development (2 CPD points).

White spot lesions and fixed orthodontic appliances: prevention and treatment

After specialization she continued working at ACTA undertaking research and lecturing the undergraduates and residents in orthodontics. She received her PhD in 2019 on the topic of prevention of white spot lesion formation during fixed appliance treatment. She was a member of the cleft and craniofacial team of Sophia Children’s Hospital in Rotterdam from 2014-2020. Since 2020 she has been a member of the cleft team of Amsterdam UMC/ACTA, and focuses on treating patients with a cleft, oligodontia or other anomalies. She is also co-owner of a private practice in Heemstede, the Netherlands.

Learning Objectives

After this lecture delegates should know which measures they can undertake to prevent the formation of white spot lesions during orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances and also what to do when they are present during and after treatment.

Abstract
Demineralization around orthodontic brackets is one of the main disadvantages of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Prior to the start of treatment an assessment to identify a high-risk patient is important. What should you advocate to minimize the risk of white spot lesion (WSL) development prior to treatment? During treatment prevention is important, by informing and instructing the patient and care-takers and by advocating additional methods such as extra fluoride, use. Which instructions should you give and do all patients need extra methods? When a WSL is present, during or after finishing active treatment, remineralization should be promoted. Is removal of the appliance the only option when you see white spots? How one year after appliance removal do you prevent the lesions being worse than directly after debonding?

Learning Objectives

As a result of this presentation, delegates will have a broader understanding and acquired skills in discussing behaviour change with patients. The intention of the presentation is to provide delegates with a deeper understanding of the science of motivating change in patients.

Abstract

This lecture will look at the idea of behaviour change in the oral health of patients. It will outline the complexities of supporting patients to adhere to dental instructions and outline common barriers to such behaviour. The talk will then move on to critically look at how dental teams often engage patients in behaviour change and the pitfalls of such actions. Behavioural science work looking to effect behaviour change will then be presented and a step-by-step guide will be offered to delegates who are considering engaging in the process.
